Apple acquires another machine learning company: Tuplejump

Apple is on the hunt of buying machine learning companies. Apple bought Perceptio at the end of 2015 and Turi a few months ago.It recentlyacquired an Indian machine-learning startup Tuplejump as it seeks to expand its expertise in artificial intelligence.

According to a report from TechCrunch, Apple has acquired yet another. While Apple won’t outright confirm it, Apple provided the typical response when they are asked during it acquired Tuplejump:

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans” Apple spokesman Colin Johnson said.

Tuplejump is a startup based out of India. The company has been working on machine learning since its inception. The Tuplejump’s website has been taken down following the acquisition, Here's how Tuplejump describes itself...

“A few years ago people realised that the volume of data that businesses generate was becoming unwieldy. A new set of technologies to handle these huge amounts of data cropped up. We were one of the early adopters of these ‘big-data’ technologies. Having helped Fortune 500 companies adopt these technologies, we quickly realised how complicated they were and how much simpler they could get.

Thus started our quest to simplify data management technologies and make them extremely simple to use. We are building technology that is simple to use, scalable and will allow people to ask difficult questions on huge datasets”.

The terms regarding the acquisition are not yet revealed.

Sources say that Apple was particularly interested in Tuplejump's FiloDB, an open source project that the company was developing to effectively apply machine learning concepts and analytics to huge amounts of critical data as it streamed in. According to its github page, FiloDB was primarily headed up by Evan Chan; Chan’s LinkedIn page says he’s been with Tuplejump since August 2015.

But will FiloDB live as an open sourceproject? It has recently moved to its own platform. The new code has been created to pull into the project.
